History of the Carrera 3.2

First released in 1984 as the successor to the outgoing 911 sc, the 3.2 Carrera came with a greater engine displacement (3.2l) and an increased power output of 231 bhp along with improved driving refinement and engine reliability attained using an L jetronic Bosch motronics DME system (an electronic fuel injection and ignition system). The 3.2 was to be the last of the tradition design 911’s before making way for significantly revised body designs along with new braking systems, power steering and new suspension technologies which were to come in the form of what Porsche named the “964”. One significant change to the 3.2 came in 1987 when the 915 gearbox was replaced with a new 5 speed transmission with a hydraulic clutch system known as the G50.

There were numerous additions throughout the 3.2 carrera range, in 1984 we saw the super sport (code name M491) which was also known as a turbo bodied car, the club sport arrived in 1987 limited to around 300 units, this was a lighter more track focused version with a blue printed engine achieving a higher rpm and a weight saving of around 70kg. The 3.2 also saw Porsche celebrate their 25th year of the 911 which they did so with the release of a special edition 911 badged as a “25th Anniversary special addition”. The speedster was the last model to be added to the Carrera 3.2 line up, this came in the final year of production and was a low roof version of the existing cabriolet with limited build numbers.
