Porsche 997 Review / History

The 997 was launched in September 2004 with both the Carrera and Carrera S models available in 2 wheel drive only, the 4wd variant being released later in 2005 before the arrival of the turbo and GT3 derivatives in 2006. The Carrera came with a 321bhp 3.6 litre water-cooled flat-six engine and the S with a 3.8 litre engine delivering 355bhp.

Body styling of the 997 was slightly reminiscent of the earlier pre water-cooled 911’s, which saw it go back to the rounded headlights we all knew and loved and not continuing with that of the 996’s. Initial chassis design and development focused primarily on the cabriolet, Porsche knowing that if they attained the required rigidity here then fitting a solid roof would only increase stiffness further. With this Porsche managed to achieve nearly identical performance figures across the range, allowing for the increased weight of the cabriolet version.

Both models came with the option of a 6 speed manual or a 5 speed tiptronic gearbox. The Carrera S models came as standard with PASM (Porsche active suspension management) and xenon lighting.

In 2009 the 997 was redesigned somewhat and Porsche introduced the generation 2 which saw a redesigned engine incorporating direct fuel injection aiding both economy and performance, other advancements included touchscreen entertainment and postcode mapping, along with Bluetooth phone connectivity. The generation 2 also dropped the conventional auto box for the revolutionary pdk twin clutch transmission system which can achieve greater performance figures than manual variants.
