Porsche 996 Review / History
Launched in 1998 the 996 Carrera 2 with an all new water cooled 6 cylinder engine was revealed. Available in Coupe only, the 3.4 litre delivered 300bhp and came with a 6-speed manual or 5 speed tiptronic gearbox and later that year the hard top cabriolet was introduced.
In 1999 the All-Wheel-drive Carrera 4 launched featuring PASM, a louder exhaust and smoked indicator lenses. In the same year the GT3 was introduced with a 3.6 litre Mezger engine that delivered 360bhp.
The year 2000 saw the special Millennium edition of the Carrera 4 with chrome alloys and the 996 Turbo was introduced with a twin turbo version of the Mezger engine that delivered 420bhp.
The GT2 was released in 2001 with a twin turbo 462bhp engine which made it the fasted 996 model to date. A major upgrade to both the Carrera 2 and Carerra 4 came in 2002 with a facelift and a larger 3.6 litre engine delivering 320bhp. Carrera 4S introduced and the new Targa model and new wider body C4S.
The GT3 had a facelift in 2004 and a limited edition GT3RS with 381bhp was launched. The GT2 had an engine upgrade which saw bhp increase to 483bhp.
