Porsche 991 Review / History

In 2012 the Porsche Carrera 991 was launched with two engine variations, the standard Carrera 991 being a 3.4 litre delivering 345bhp and the Carrera S with a 3.8 litre engine delivering 395bhp both of these available as a Coupe or Cabriolet, in either rear wheel drive or all-wheel drive options.
2013 saw the launch of the 3.8 litre 991 GT3 with the 4.0 litre RS version following in 2015, both of which were no longer available with a conventional manual gearbox and now supplied with Porsche’s doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission. Alongside the GT3’s came the Turbo and Turbo S models with a 3.8 litre twin turbo charged engine producing around 512bhp and 552bhp retrospectively.

Late in 2014 saw the launch of the all new Targa with a more than impressive roof design which incorporates both a convertible top whilst retaining the large glass domed rear window.

The second generation 991 was released in 2016 with a 3 litre twin turbo flat-six engine, this is a first for Porsche to turbo charge all standard 911’s seeing an increase in performance across the range.

In 2017 Porsche launched the GT2 RS which is one of the most powerful 911’s ever produced with a power to weight ratio of around 2.1kg to 1 bhp and a Nurburgring lap record for a production 911 of just 6.47.3 minutes. This year also saw the 4.0 litre GT3 available as a Sport and Touring edition, both with the option of manual or PDK transmission and not to disappoint a 4.0 litre GT3 RS variant arrived in 2018.
