Porsche Cayman 987 Review / History

The Porsche Cayman 987 was first introduced in 2005, with the public unveiling taking place at the Frankfurt motor show in September and the arrival into the Porsche UK showrooms coming later that year. The Cayman 987 3.4 S was the first model released, followed by the 2.7 engine version in 2006. Both generation one Caymans were available with the option of a 5 speed tiptronic or manual gearbox. The 987 Cayman S was supplied with a 6 speed manual gearbox and the 2.7 variant supplied with a five speed manual gearbox as standard, with the option of the six speed if desired. The Gen 1 Caymans were produced until the end of the 2008 model year, the 2009 model year saw the introduction of the gen 2 Porsche Cayman, where the Cayman S engine gained direct fuel injection and the none S variant seeing a cylinder capacity increase from 2.7 to 2.9, both Caymans now available with a 6 speed manual transmission or the new 7 speed PDK transmission. Porsche also introduced a limited slip differential for both Gen 2 models as a factory option.
